SEO audits are designed to look at the content on a web page and determine if the page is optimised for search engine search or not. SEO audits are usually carried out before or shortly after site promotion.
Before starting to carry out SEO audits, a business should already have an SEO strategy in place. The SEO strategy will need to be analysed and a list of keywords or key phrases should be generated. This is because many people often use the same keywords or key phrases when doing searches online. When choosing a keyword list, business owners should remember that a list containing too many common keywords will turn up higher in the search engine result pages than a list containing more uncommon keywords. Businesses should also ensure that the keyword density is at least twenty percent.
For each keyword or key phrase, the page content should be written and ranked according to its importance. After a list of keywords has been generated, it should be examined closely to identify any duplications. It is also important to make sure that the keyword density is not excessive. If the keyword density is excessive, then this could mean that the page is attracting too much traffic. This could be likened to the page ranking of sites that have too many similar links.
After all the keyword research has been completed, the next step involves the actual search engine crawl. The crawling process is carried out by software, which monitors the internal structure of the web page. The software will look for elements such as XML page tags, document headings, comments, site maps, open tags, coordinates, page titles, site navigation and Meta tags. All of these elements should be identified and added into the page. Each and every one should be crawl-able by the search engine.
The next step is the page status check. This is carried out after the entire search engine’s crawl has been carried out. Any changes to the page should be noted and reported to the SEO audit company. It is also important to make sure that any changes are done in line with the guidelines set out by Google.
The SEO audit team will look closely at the incoming links, which are directed towards the targeted website. This is known as backlink analysis. The team will look at the quality of the links from Google, Yahoo and MSN. This is known as link juice.
