Google Algorithm Changes
Google Algorithm updates have been a topic of much discussion since the beginning of the internet. Google states on their main page that they “frequently update our algorithms.” In fact, Google states “We make no changes to the ranking algorithm itself-rather, we issue bug-fix updates for all Google products and services.” The biggest algorithm update is probably the Panda update, which Google released in late 2021 and which drastically changed the landscape for SEO.
From a business perspective, it can be said that the Google panda update was one of the most important factors behind the surge of organic SEO traffic that Google enjoys today. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s a good time to start an SEO program or that you should jump the gun and start purchasing Google tools and SEO software. The panda update affected many sites across the board, so even if you had a top site before the change, you’re probably not going to see increases in rankings after the change. Nonetheless, Google did remove the barrier of relevancy by making the algorithm more transparent and making it easier for webmasters to understand why they might be getting a high ranking for a given keyword.
So, what exactly was the algorithm based on that banned the panda theme? Google cited several factors including overoptimization, poor link building and over-optimization of internal pages. Google went as far as to state that these were some of the reasons for the rise of spam sites on Google. The result of the Panda update was that it ruffled the feathers of those who had spent years optimizing their sites for Google with great results. Now, they have to learn how to compete with websites that don’t have any intent to please Google. This may make it harder to develop a truly organic SEO program, but the panda theme certainly gave rise to a new term: Webmaster Guidelines.
The problem lies with Google not always being clear about what they are looking for. Even though the algorithm is still in effect, Google themselves have been quick to point out that the results of their algorithm updates were not as diverse as we once thought. It is therefore important for webmasters to stay abreast of Google’s changes in their search results and apply the correct strategies. One of the problems that arose from the panda update was the belief that Google was reducing the effect of links on the search results. This is not the case, but Google is reducing the effect of external links by decreasing the strength of the link for certain keywords.
Another major controversy is centered on the fact that Google has made the algorithm more transparent. Prior to the panda update Google only released two major changes: the Panda update and the Penguin update. These updates marked the first major changes to Google’s algorithms – however, the algorithms have remained pretty much the same for all the years since then. The real problem is that after every algorithm change Google has issued a number of minor tweaks in an effort to “simplify” the system, but the changes have only had a limited effect on the results. This means that many webmasters still believe that their websites are severely affected by these changes, even when the damage is very minor.
There was one major change made by Google after the panda update: they introduced a new feature called Penguin. Penguin is designed to try and prevent webmasters from intentionally building backlinks to their own site – known as ” Penguin “Panda Style “. This method has been used by a lot of webmasters over the last few years, but because of the way Penguin works Google introduced this new detection system to try and counteract this behaviour. Penguin does not work by checking the entire backlink profile of a website, rather it works by checking out the links that have been attached to a specific website within the past seven days. This means that any backlinks built in this time period will be counted towards the website’s rating.
So what exactly was the inspiration behind the penguin? Google researcher Christopher Morrison came up with the idea whilst working on the Panda update, the update which introduced Penguin into Google. He therefore created a new algorithm, called Panda, which was designed to check for certain behaviours that could be considered to be deliberately building backlinks to a specific website. His aim was to prevent webmasters from using this tactic as a way to gain unfair advantage. He also wanted to make it harder for spammers to create fake backlinks to websites. Google has introduced two different updates in order to counteract this.
Google has released two major updates in attempts to prevent webmasters from using Penguin or Panda in order to gain an unfair advantage. These algorithm changes have caused a lot of confusion in the internet marketing community and many people are wondering if Google is going to ditch its previous algorithm in the future.
