Google Algorithm Changes: Eliminating Spam

What is a Google Algorithm Change? Google updates the algorithms that it uses to index web pages on the internet on a regular basis. Over the years, Google has developed a better method of indexing web pages than how it has been used in the past. The latest Google updates are called Penguin and Panda.

How is Google Algorithm Used? Google updates the algorithms that it uses to index websites on the web so that they are able to provide quality content for users searching through Google. These updates can either be very small and only affect your rankings immediately, or they can be large and effect your rankings almost overnight. However, why does Google have to continually update its algorithms?

Google first implemented Panda in January of 2021. Google went ahead and changed the definition of spam by creating a new algorithm for websites that are considered to be spammy. Google categorized websites that are full of either spam text or a lot of link building methods that will just push people to spam websites. After Google implemented this algorithm change, many websites saw their Google rankings drop dramatically.

Google went ahead and rolled out two more Google Algorithm updates in July of 2021 and November of 2021. Google originally put out an update in July that will roll out for everyone on a month by month basis. Google’s update contained some major algorithm changes, but a lot of people do not realize that Google actually did not roll out the panda algorithm change with these two updates. Google only rolled out the Panda algorithm change to the United States, and then they rolled it out globally.

Google released the Panda update to deal with a very large amount of spam that was on websites. Google claims that because Google was dealing with a lot of low quality sites, and their organic results were starting to get flagging for too many low quality sites. Google claims that through panda’s algorithm changes, they have been able to reduce the amount of spam that is being placed on websites while at the same time increasing the amount of high quality sites that are being ranked. This all sounds good, but is this really true?

The problem with Google using their own internal algorithm to rank a website is that everyone has a different definition of what exactly is spam. Google has been taking measures to cut the amount of spam that is being placed on the internet. They have done this by incorporating directly into their Google Analytics software. Google has also made it very easy for internet marketers to identify certain phrases that may sound spammy, but have been banned in other contexts. Google has even developed tools to help internet marketers analyze where their traffic is coming from and how their algorithms are working.

If we look at the Google Panda update closely, we can see that it doesn’t have a whole lot to do with cutting down spam. It seems to be more about eliminating low quality content and increasing the quality of high quality content that is being placed on websites. With these two factors, it is not surprising that Google has decided to incorporate their algorithm changes into their own. They have made it extremely easy for internet marketers to recognize low-quality content and have even implemented measures to prevent low-quality content from being indexed again in the future.

There are no major changes to Google’s ranking system, but they did incorporate directly into their system what they call “discovery” in which they will look into a site’s past behavior and how it related to a search query that was conducted in the past. After doing this, Google will then take the newly calculated factors and compare them to search queries in the future. Based on what it finds, it will make algorithm changes to their system, which in turn will affect all of the publishers and webmasters who rely on Google to deliver traffic to their sites. Changes like these, if they are implemented correctly, should decrease the amount of spam on the net and increase the quality of links.
