Employee turnover is an unfortunate fact of business life. It can lead to a decrease in productivity, cost, reputation, and customer trust. Because of this, businesses need to take a variety of steps to foster greater employee retention, including providing strong incentives, setting expectations, and following up with those who leave to provide honest feedback. Here are five ways that you can implement a customer retention program to help increase retention:
Provide Value. One important step you can take to increase retention is to provide value at onboarding events. Oftentimes, companies find great employees when they make an effort to hire them, but it can be difficult to identify their personality and work style. Through onboarding events, you can provide potential candidates with real-world experiences instead of simply screening them based on their technical skills. In addition, by creating an environment where people can openly communicate without being afraid of failure, you increase retention because people are more likely to follow the company’s rules and norms.
Use Push Notifications. When onboarding new staff, always send out quick and actionable information about what is happening with that person. If an employee quits or is fired, send out a quick email and a notification on the company’s Facebook page or through the company’s mobile app. These notifications let employees know that they are no longer a valuable part of the company, and that the company has replaced them with someone more qualified. Likewise, if an employee is looking for a new role, send a quick email or alert using one of the company’s apps to let them know that they have been targeted for the role of “high impact.” All of these actions make employees feel valued and important, which increases retention.
Advertise Internal Events. An internal event such as a grand opening or other celebration can help increase retention because these events create an environment of recognition and pride in the business. Even small gestures, such as giving away a free promotional item, can send a strong message to customers that help sets the foundation for customer retention. Small gestures go a long way in building brand awareness and creating a positive image. In addition, if these same promotional items are then used internally during customer retention training, the message becomes even more powerful because it is already remembered and appreciated.
Enhance Your Company Culture. A strong company culture is essential for increased retention. It is the shared values, mission, and practices that allow employees to identify with the business and become a valued part of it. A strong company culture also makes it easier to attract and retain high quality staff.
Include a Workplace Performance Plan. Your company needs a workplace performance plan (also called a workplace performance strategy) to include specific goals, measures, and incentives that can be used to increase retention and engagement. This plan should also set forth how and when these goals will be achieved, as well as providing avenues for monitoring and measuring progress and implementing corrective measures if needed.
Create Aurrent Workplace Environment. The current environment within your company culture and HR department may be causing employees to feel disengaged and frustrated. To create a more engaged and motivated work place, you need to provide opportunities for employees to experience growth and development. This can take the form of training, additional resources, professional development, workshops, networking opportunities, and more. When you give employees opportunities for growth and development, they are more likely to experience a sense of worth and satisfaction with the work they do each day, which can boost retention and motivation.
Send Out Regular Feedback and Employee Appreciation Awards. An annual salary increase is a great incentive, but you can really increase retention and motivation by sending employees out for a buyback program or other incentive-based reward programs. When employees know they are getting a bonus or promotion because of their job performance, they are much more likely to go out and buy in to the company’s goals and beliefs. By rewarding employees on a regular basis with recognition or an incentive paid through the employer, you are showing them that they are valued and important, which can make them want to come back and continue to contribute to the success of the business.
